Adding A Transfer
It is no secret that I am a huge fan of boho, so it was only fitting that I add the Western Tapestry transfer into this piece. I made sure I cleaned and prepped my piece first and then I place the transfer where I wanted it. I trimmed around the edges with my craft knife and then used the redesign transfer tool to burnish the transfer.
Starting The Layered Chippy Paint Look
Dixie Belle’s Sea Spray is one of my favorite products to use. Texture is one of my favorite furniture looks. You can do so much with the sea spray and today this chippy look is no exception!! I used three different colors as my base coat. I added the paint with a scoop of the sea spray.
After I mixed the three colors (Terracotta, Muscadine Wine and Colonel Mustard) with the sea spray, I applied the mixtures to the piece. Using different tools to apply the mixture gives you different end results, therefore your chippy look is more authentic. For this piece I use a putty knife to spread the mixture. I also used a cheap chip brush to apply it on non-flat surfaces as well as to create more peaks and texture.
Adding The Top Color Layer
This buffet is intended to be bold, a statement piece if you will. Therefore, I chose Mermaid Tail as my top coat color!! I only painted one layer of the Mermaid Tail because I am was going to distress, sand, scrape the buffet anyways. I didn’t want a perfect solid coat of paint for this step.
Finishing Off The Layered Chippy Paint Technique
I used a few different tools to expose the bottom layer of paints, distress and just create and overall aged and worn look. While the paint is still wet I took the putty knife and gently scraped across the flatter areas, as a result it exposed some of the color underneath and helped pull some of the paint down to the wood for a chippy look.
After the Mermaid Tail was fully dry, I went back with sandpaper and steel wool to distress and exposed more of the colors under and distress a little more. I wiped away the excess dust and debris and then sealed my piece with Easy Peasy Spray Wax. This is my favorite product to use for textured pieces.
