Before the makeover!

I have always been a huge fan of a good apothecary cabinet. When my friend said she wanted her piece made into a cute entryway piece I knew EXACTLY what it needed!! I wanted to add color while making it look like an apothecary cabinet. Below is a list of supplies I used for this transformation.

Decoupaging The Back

I wanted to add extra character to the back of this cabinet. I unscrewed the back to make it much easier to work with.

After I had the back of the cabinet off, I used the Clear Coat and tissue paper to change the look.

The first thing you will want to do is lay down a layer of clear coat with a sponge brush. Then you will want to lay down the tissue paper. Once your tissue paper is laid down, you will re-apply the clear coat. Furthermore, I like to mist the surface with water and use a smooth glove to push out all of the wrinkles and air bubbles. Smoothing Imperfections

Dixie Belle Paint does not require you to sand prior to application, however the top of this piece was not smooth. I used my Surf Prep sander to smooth the imperfections on the top of this cabinet. Therefore, my finish would be flawless.

Painting The Shell

Normally I paint about 90% of my pieces by hand. With that being said, cubbies and chairs are my enemy! I used my Apollo Spray System for this project. I sprayed the cabinet in Fluff Chalk Mineral Paint. My Wagner Spray Tent helped with overspray and shielded it from debris outside. As a result I got a smooth finish that I didn’t have to use hours trying to get.

Adding Color

I know by now you are surprised that I used a shade of white for this piece. You didn’t think I would finish this piece without adding color did you? This DIY apothecary cabinet had to have some color!

Distressing With Rad Pads

I needed to add some distressing to this piece as well. I have to tell you my new favorite hand sanding pads to use are the Surf Prep Rad Pads. They are super high quality, you can cut them or fold them in half. They last a long time also. You can reuse them for quite some time. I used the fine grit pad to soften the paint finish to a smooth and flawless look. I used the medium pads to distress.

Finishing The Look With Hardware

I bought the small card catalog hardware from amazon. They went perfect with this piece and really gave it the look it needed to be a DIY apothecary cabinet!! I finished off the entire piece with Easy Peasy Spray Wax.
